Epigenetics is the process of influencing the expression of these genes by diet and lifestyle choices.
Knowledge of the presence of certain genetic variations can potentially change the recommendations that are suggested to our patients. An example of one such variation is the MTHFR variant. However, the human body is extremely complex and more complete knowledge of the genetic information is much more valuable than a single gene variation, or SNP. We are now capable of seeing large parts of our genetic material inexpensively. We are working towards understanding more clearly the relationship between genetic variations and health/disease.
